Introduction of McCarthyism.

Curators Note:

McCarthyism was a widely anticipated event in American politics and social life in the early 1950s. Named after Senator Joseph McCarthy who participated in it, this is an anti communist movement. The core of McCarthyism is to investigate and accuse individuals suspected of communist activities within the United States and government agencies, and through a series of hearings, attempt to expose the infiltration of communism in the government and cultural fields. This movement has led to many people losing their jobs, creating a panic atmosphere in society where those who are suspected are often stigmatized and unable to defend themselves. However, McCarthyism has also been widely criticized for its abuse of power and lack of evidence. In later years, this movement was seen as a serious threat to freedom of speech and political dissent, and had a profound impact on American society. Today, McCarthyism is still considered a dark period in American history, reminding people to reflect on the abuse of power and society's tolerance for dissent.

Preface:

McCarthyism refers to the typical anti communist and far right representatives in the United States who originated from Senator McCarthy between 1950 and 1954. It maliciously slandered and persecuted suspected communists, democratic progressives, and even anyone with different political views.
From the early 1950s when McCarthyism began to spread, to the five years before and after its complete failure by the end of 1954, its influence spread to all aspects of the United States. McCarthyism, as a proprietary term, has also become synonymous with political persecution. In that era, it sparked anti communist and xenophobic movements represented by McCarthyism, involving various aspects of American politics, education, and culture, and its influence is still visible.

Historical reasons:

After the end of World War II, the shadow of war had not yet disappeared in the United States, and the terrifying atmosphere of the Cold War followed one after another. On the one hand, the United States is confronting the Soviet Union internationally, and on the other hand, it is afraid of the rise of communism domestically. At the same time, due to the sharp rise in domestic inflation in the United States, 34700 strikes occurred in just one year, with over 4.5 million workers taking to the streets. The Non American Committee of the House took the opportunity to accuse the workers' union and vigorously incite the public to oppose communism and the Communist Party.

Early stage:

On November 14, 1908, Joseph McCarthy was born into a small farmer family in northern Wisconsin. In 1939, McCarthy falsely declared his age and ran for the position of judge in the Seventh District Circuit Court of Wisconsin, becoming the youngest judge in the history of the district. From then on, McCarthy began a political career full of deception and lies. In 1946, McCarthy, who had retired from the military, ran for senator and was elected as a senator from Wisconsin in November of that year. During his first four years in the Senate, his reputation plummeted due to misconduct, gambling, and alcoholism.
February 9, 1950 was the birthday anniversary of the 16th President of the United States, Lincoln, and McCarthy decided to fire shells at the State Department on this day. Under the arrangement of the Republican National Committee, he flew from Washington to Virginia and gave a speech titled "Communist Party in the State Department" at the Republican Women's Club, claiming that he had a list of 205 people in his hands, all of whom were members of the Communist Party and spy networks. The Secretary of State knows that these people on the list are all Communist Party members, but they are still drafting and formulating policies for the State Council. McCarthy's speech was like a bolt from the blue, causing a sensation throughout the United States. McCarthy, who had previously walked on thin ice, became a political star that shook the country overnight.

High tide:

During the most rampant period of McCarthyism, key departments such as the US State Department, Department of Defense, important defense factories, Voice of America, and the US government printing office were unable to escape the investigation of McCarthy's Non American Activities Investigation Committee. At the same time, the left-wing power of the United States has also been hit unprecedentedly. In 1953 alone, McCarthy's committee held over 600 investigative activities, as well as 17 public hearings broadcasted live on television. Over time, McCarthy's activities have increasingly sparked public opposition. In Europe, people directly compare McCarthy to Hitler.

Ending:

At the Army McCarthy Hearing in 1954, McCarthy encountered his Waterloo. The American cable television network conducted a live broadcast of this series of influential hearings. When the Army Department exposed McCarthy's various overstepping of authority and illegal activities, uncovering the dark curtain of McCarthy's investigation activities, McCarthy resorted to his usual tactics of gossip and sensationalism, and deliberately interfered with the hearing and investigation in front of the national television audience, abusing Senate proceedings. On December 1, 1954, amidst a wave of condemnation from all walks of life across the country, the United States Senate passed a resolution to impeach McCarthy and condemn him. On May 2, 1957, McCarthy died of acute hepatitis at Bethesda Naval Hospital at the age of 48.

The impact caused:

During the most rampant period of McCarthyism, China US relations were frozen under the cold ice of the Cold War. Under the influence of McCarthyism, "anti communism" became the mainstream choice in the United States. McCarthy's provocation on the China issue has led several US administrations, including Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, to adopt a very rigid East Asian policy, and no one dared to proactively propose contact with the People's Republic of China. McCarthyism represents a broad political alliance of conservative and xenophobic groups throughout American society, and no one can escape their attacks. Even academic circles that believe in academic freedom find it difficult to resist the influence of McCarthyism.

Uconn Culture: Basketball.

 Uconn Culture: Basketball.

Preface:

Welcome to my blog. When we talk about the University of Connecticut, we always think of a team, the famous UConn Huskies. It has become an important school culture of the University of Connecticut, and it has also brought me to this beautiful and historically renowned American university.

Uconn Basketball Team:

The University of Connecticut is one of the most important public universities in Connecticut, USA, and its basketball team holds a significant position in the college basketball industry. The history of the UConn basketball team can be traced back to the late 19th century, when the cultivation and development of basketball began. The team has achieved numerous honors and achievements with outstanding performance. The success of the UConn basketball team is not limited to the field, but has had a huge impact on the entire state of Connecticut and the basketball industry in the United States.

The success of a team often depends on legendary coaches. The University of Connecticut basketball team has gone through multiple glorious eras.

Hugh Greer era(1946-1963) :

After graduating from the Agricultural College of the University of Connecticut, Hugh Greer, a basketball team graduate, stayed at his alma mater and became a team coach. He was officially appointed as the head coach of the team in the 1946-47 season. In his first season, Greer led the team to win all 12 games, and his record of 16 wins and 2 losses was also the best record since the establishment of the basketball team. In the 16 full seasons led by Greer, Huskies won 12 Yankee League championship titles. During the Greer era, Uconn basketball was a top team in the region.

Jim Calhoun ear (1986-2012) :

In the 1986-87 season, Uconn hired Jim Calhoun as the new head coach of the team. The dream season of 1990 brought the Uconn basketball team back to the national stage. This year, the team also had their own new stadium, the Gampal Pavilion. In the NCAA Championship that year, Uconn became the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Throughout the 1990s, Uconn's performance on the national stage flourished, winning 5 regular season championships in the Eastern Conference and 3 league championships. However, the top four of the NCAA consistently rejected Uconn and Calhoun until 1999, when the team finally made a breakthrough and won the NCAA Championship for the first time, the highest honor in college basketball.During his coaching period, the University of Connecticut won the national championship three times(1999, 2004, 2011).

Kevin Ollie ear (2012-2018) :

In September 2012, the legendary coach Jim Calhoun retired, and Kevin Ollie officially became his successor. Ollie himself graduated from the University of Connecticut and is one of the legendary defenders of the school. Ollie had previously played for 13 seasons in the NBA, playing for a total of 11 different teams during these 13 years. His NBA career average was only 3.8 points and 2.3 assists per game, which is not considered a success, but his talent was showcased at the University of Connecticut. After joining the University of Connecticut as a teaching assistant, Ollie performed exceptionally well and received high praise from the team. In 2014, Ollie led the team to once again win the NCAA championship.

Dan Hurley ear (2018-present) :

After winning multiple national championships, the University of Connecticut has become a nationally renowned basketball powerhouse, but the team has not slackened and continues to maintain an active training and preparation state for the game. In 2023, the team once again stood on the highest podium.

Our team has achieved brilliant results in its long history.
We have won five national championships and countless league championships.

1999 NCAA Championship, 77-74 Duke.
2004 NCAA Championship, 82-73 Georgia Tech.
2011 NCAA Championship, 53-41 Butler.
2014 NCAA Championship, 60-54 Kentucky.
2023 NCAA Championship, 76-59 San Diego State.

Similarly, our school has provided a large number of players for the NBA, such as Ray Allen, Kemba Walker, Rudy Gay and Andre Drummond.

My own experiences and the influence of Uconn's culture:

After the start of this semester, I watched several basketball games at our school, and I was deeply attracted by the school's strong basketball culture and atmosphere. The first point is the school's emphasis on basketball as a sport, and the school will distribute free student tickets to uconn students on its website.

The picture above is first night. That night, the host introduced the players of our men's and women's basketball teams to us.

This picture is the champion member of our school.

The entire process of the game was filled with intense competition, tense atmosphere, and exciting moments, which deeply impressed me with the charm of basketball games. The athletes on the court demonstrated top-notch basketball skills and excellent teamwork. Every move they make on the field showcases the results of their long and hard training. The atmosphere on the field is filled with tension, making people full of anticipation for the result of the game. The cheers in the audience formed a vivid scene. The enthusiastic participation of the audience made the entire stadium even more lively.

Through watching this basketball game, I deeply feel the charm of sports. It is not only the technical level demonstrated by athletes in the competition, but also the spirit of teamwork and hard work conveyed throughout the entire competition process. This sportsmanship is not only reflected in competitions, but also inspires us to have the courage to move forward when facing difficulties in daily life.

As a big basketball fan and as I said in the preface, what attracts me the most to the University of Connecticut is its basketball culture and Uconn basketball team, so during the application season, I chose the University of Connecticut among many offers. In my first semester during the school, I watched several basketball games in Gampel and I loved the atmosphere during the games. Basketball represents unity and cooperation, and the players of the University of Connecticut team win games through cooperation, which inspires us to also work together for mutual benefit in learning. Uconn uses basketball to bring students from all over the world together and cheer for the team during matches. As a member of the University of Connecticut, I am proud of my team and school. This will inspire me to forge ahead on the future path, and one day, my alma mater will be proud of my existence.

Student for a day, Husky forever!!!
